When you have to trust the water you are drinking - no matter where you are...

"Do you use a water filter when you are camping? Would you be willing to bet your health on it?"

Most lakes and rivers contain bacteria, cysts and chemicals -
Now you can be sure they are not going to be in your water...

Enjoy your time camping and hiking!, The last thing you want when you are out in the wilderness is to become ill drinking contaminated water. Even if you don't have to try to find a doctor in an unfamiliar region, the discomfort and inconvenience of a water-borne illness is something you can well do without!

Cryptosporidia and giardia

These images of giardia and cryptosporidia are illness causing organisms commonly found in fresh water along with bacteria such as E. Coli. Hardly attractive and certainly not something you want in your water - or you! Even waterways which look pristine contain these organisms as they are "deposited" there by the wildlife. Just as bad are chemicals such as pesticides and fertilisers which may have contaminated the water from crop-dusting or run-off from agricultural operations.

When you choose a portable water purifier, you need one that meets these essential criteria:

If it fails one or more of these criteria, you are just wasting your money or worse, risking your health. And you really can't afford to do either.

The US Army and the UN Peacekeeping Forces Rely on First Need Water Purifiers

If the US Army uses the First Need series of water purifiers you can be confident that it has been thoroughly evaluated under harsh conditions. Not only the army, but UN Peacekeeping forces and aid workers use the First Need purifiers when providing relief following tsunamis, earthquakes, cyclones and other natural disasters. These are times when clean water - not to mention electricity or chemicals to purify it - may not be available.

The devestation caused by Tsunamis that hit eleven countries in Asia a few years ago was extensive. Aid workers from around the world immediately began relief efforts rushing food, medicine, supplies and - most importantly - safe clean drinking water to the victims of the disaster. General Ecology's First Need portable water purifiers have been relied on by campers and hikers for years, and they became an invaluable source of pure water for relief workers travelling to tsunami-stricken areas in Indonesia.

Relief Worker Linley York and First Need Water Purifier

The child pictured above, along with other villagers, warned relief worker Linley York about getting diarrhoea from drinking the water. Linley relied on the First Need Deluxe for several months in Indonesia and never became ill. Linley commented that the First Need purifier "made it easier for relief workers to get their jobs done, without the added worries of health issues for themselvers... we often carry supplies on our back and water becomes very heavy."

RELIEF WORK...

photo"I have a photo of me in the village using it... complete with the brown water we use. I used [the] hand pump to supply water during my time there. Water is probably the number one most important item in the entire Tsunami hit area. Clean water is precious."

MOUNTAIN RESCUE...

"First Need systems have provided our team with the security and confidence that the water is free of organisms, and significantly reduces our overall pack weight. [It] has provided us with an extremely lightweight, fully functional water purification system. First Need had virtually eliminated our fears in questionable situations."

- LARRY W. HOWELL,
President/Commander,
Southern Colorado High Angle Rescue Team, Inc.

VALUE FOR MONEY...

"[T]he unit is about the best value for money I have found. The First Need is simple and effective. I would not hesitate to use this unit anywhere in the world. What more can I say?"

- C. Todd, NSW

GREAT VICTORIA DESERT CROSSING EXPEDITION...

photo"The 'First Need' purifier units performed really well, were light in weight, robust and easy to use... [T]he units perfromed excellently and really contributed to the success of the expedition. We suffered no ill-effects drinking water from a rock hole which even had a dead camel carcass in it. That must be a recommendation!"

- Tim Jarvis,
Storm The Desert Trek 2001

If you've ever had to carry bottled water you will know how heavy it is. Of course, you can always use chemicals to purify the water when you get to your destination. But the purification chemicals leave a foul taste so you have to remove them before you drink. Then again, you can always boil the water. But waiting for it to heat up and then cool down means you can't have water when you want it. And, boiling water does not remove chemicals such as pesticides from it!

Some other purification technologies rely on UV light to purify the water. And, yes, with time UV will purify water of microorganisms - provided the water is clear. Any turbidity in the water reduces the effectiveness of UV. Oh, and you end up drinking the dead organisms as they are not removed from the water. Neither are harmful chemicals or heavy metals. Your body doesn't need that - it needs clean water.

When you are camping or hiking
You don't want to have to think about your water

When you are out camping or hiking, you don't want to have to think about the quality of the water you will have available. You just want to be able to drink it and cook with it and not have to worry. While adults may be able to tolerate some contamination of water, young children and the elderly may become very ill.

Water is essential for survival...
Now you can have pure water from any fresh water source

You don't need to drink pure water to survive in the bush, but you run the risk of contracting a range of other illnesses. A recent study highlighted the risk of faecal contamination of water sources near popular camping grounds and hiking trails. The water looked clean and clear but harboured a hazardous number of disease causing microorganisms.

You need your water to be safe.

The First Need Deluxe:

It can be screwed to most trail and bike water bottles to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination. The 91 cm long inlet hose contains a pre-filter and adjustable float. The carry bag can be used in a gravity-feed set-up to purify water while you do something else. Of course, if you want water now, the First Need Deluxe produces crystal clear water at a rate of 1.7 litres per minute. There is no holding time or double pumping - just suspect water in, pure water out!

These points make the First Need Deluxe a first choice for campers, hikers and cyclists all over the world.

"Can you verify your water purifier is working?"

It's one thing to have a water filter or purifier, but when you are in the middle of nowhere how do you know that it is still working effectively? If it is malfunctioning, the water coming out still looks good but may contain seriously harmful contaminants and pathogens.

The First Need Deluxe can be tested in the field so you always have complete confidence that your water is pure. The unit comes with a small test kit so that you can verify the integrity of the purifier before you leave home - and, just as importantly, once you are in the field. There is nothing worse than having a malfunctioning water purifier and relying on it to preserve your health.

P.S. The First Need Deluxe can be used anywhere - not just when you are camping. If you travel overseas, you know that you can't drink the water in many other countries. Even resorts and high class hotels still use the local water supply. If you have a First Need with you, then you can drink purified water without any worries about becoming ill and spoiling your trip. It is much cheaper than a hospital stay.
